How To Replace The Gearcase In A Kenmore Direct Drive Washer

This is how to remove the gearcase from the washer

  1. The first thing you need to do before working on the washer, is to disconnect the washer from the wall outlet. This way there will not be any electricity flowing through the washer when you are working on it.
  2. Turn the water faucets off, put a towel on the floor to collect any water drips from the water valve and remove the two fill hoses from the washer.
  3. You will need to make sure that the washer is empty of water before removing the drain hose
  4. Move the towel and put it under the drain hose to catch any water left on the pump and remove the drain hose
  5. Open the door and remove the agitator
  6. Put something on the floor to protect the washer and lay the washer down on its back
  7. Disconnect the drain hose from the pump.
  8. Disconnect the tub to pump holds and remove it
  9. Disconnect the wire harness from the motor, start capacitor and from the plastic wire hanging clip
  10. Unscrew the tree gearcase holding screws or bolts
  11. Now the gearcase is ready to be removed. You will need to be careful when removing the gearcase because the gearcase the motor and the pump are altogether and they’re pretty heavy
  12. Grab the gearcase and start pulling it out. Sometimes it will come out very easily and other times it will be a little harder to remove it
  13. After removing the gearcase from the washer unit remove some parts from the old gearcase and installed them on the new gearcase

How to prepare the new gearcase before installing it

  1. You could put the gearcase on top of a table or if you have a vice to hold it in place it will be even better
  2. Remove the clutch assembly and install it on the new gearcase
  3. Disengage the motor holding clips and remove the motor from the gearcase
  4. Next you will need to remove the motor mounting plate from the bad gearcase and install it on the new gearcase
  5. If the motor coupler is in good condition you could reuse it, but the best thing to do is to replace it with a new one
  6. After installing the motor couple of on the new gearcase is time to install the motor
  7. Now the gearcase is ready to be installed

How to install the gearcase

  1. Before installing the gearcase in the machine you will need to reset brake cam
  2. To reset the brake cam do the following. Grab the brake camp and turn it counterclockwise to release the brake and push it all away in as you turning it
  3. Make sure that the spring on the brake assembly is on top
  4. Also make sure that the spring on the clutch is pointing towards the motor and pump
  5. Grab the gearcase and set it in place and screw in the three holding screws or bolts
  6. Install the tub to pump and the drain hose to the pump
  7. Connect the wire harness to the motor and the start capacitor and secure it to the gearcase
  8. Stand up the washer in install the agitator
  9. Install the drain hose and connect the fill hoses
  10. Now the washer should be ready to be tried out
